This double-sided medallion painted in oil on silver is a rare work by Alessandro Allori, the Florentine Mannerist painter trained under Bronzino. The front depicts a young woman wearing a pearl necklace, while the reverse bears a cryptic Latin inscription illustrating a complex allegory linked to the constellation of Taurus and the loss of sight and hearing. The medallion’s concave shape suggests it may originally have adorned the lid of a small precious box. Only a handful of comparable medallions painted by Allori on metal are known today, making this a rare survival of his work on this support.
